Giving the Perfect Bottle of Wine | Sippin Somm Wines
Finding the perfect wine gift can feel like a daunting task, especially when you want to avoid the standard grocery store selections.
When I used to work at a wine shop and people needed a bottle of wine either for that night’s dinner, a gift, or a party, I’d walk around with them and ask some questions - what’s the budget, red/white/rose/sparkling/sweet, do they have a favorite, is there a special occasion, what are we eating it with, etc. From there, I’d pick a few selections and give short explainers on each one.
Wine stores, whether they’re online or in-person can be an intimidating place, good wine professionals are supposed to help guide you to your best choice, it is their inventory after all. Big stores have thousands upon thousands of wine choices, and the likelihood that they know about them all, much less tasted them, is highly unlikely - it's a great asset if you know the exact brand and wine you’re looking for, but past that a curated selections increase the likelihood that the staff know their product.
So, without having individual conversations with you about selecting wine, here’s a cheat sheet to (hopefully) make your wine gifting a little easier this holiday season.
For the One Who Likes it a Little Sweeter
La Montecchia Sparkling Orange Moscato
Does your recipient have a sweet tooth or love cocktails like a lemon drop or mimosa? This bubbly and sweet Moscato is a delightful choice. With its vibrant orange and floral notes, it’s approachable and fun—I like to think of it as a mimosa, hold the OJ. It’s also a true/pure wine - there are no “fruit additives” like mango or peach puree, it is just characteristic of the grape grown predominantly in the Colli Euganei region of Italy.
