  • Tasting Notes

The 2018 Pasetti Harimann Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is concentrated and structured with a deep ruby-red color. On the nose, there's a complex bouquet of ripe red fruits — including marasca cherry, plum, and blackberry — intertwined with delicate floral notes of violet. After a couple swirls, the wine begins to open, revealing subtle secondary aromas of tobacco, leather, licorice, cinnamon, and hints of dark chocolate and coffee.

On the palate, Harimann is full-bodied yet balanced, combining dense, concentrated fruit with refined, silky tannins and vibrant acidity that lift the wine and provide structure. Flavors echo the aromatic complexity, with dark cherry, plum, and spice framed by earthy undertones and a persistent, long finish. Designed for aging 10–15 years, this Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is enjoyable now, but will develop further nuance over time, making it a standout expression of Pasetti’s estate vineyards and a refined representation of Abruzzo’s unique terroir.

  • Story

Famiglia Pasetti is a historic, family-owned winery based in Abruzzo, with roots dating back to the early 1800s. What began as vineyard ownership evolved into a full winemaking estate in the 1960s, when the Pasetti family began bottling wines under their own name — a defining moment that set the stage for the winery’s modern identity.

Today, the estate is led by Mimmo Pasetti, whose vision has been instrumental in elevating Montepulciano d’Abruzzo beyond its everyday reputation. Under his leadership, Pasetti has focused on quality-driven production, careful site selection, and a renewed emphasis on Abruzzo’s native grape varieties.

Rather than chasing international trends, Famiglia Pasetti remains committed to crafting wines that reflect the authentic character of Abruzzo, combining tradition with thoughtful, modern winemaking. Bottlings like Harimann represent the winery’s more ambitious side — designed to showcase Montepulciano’s depth, structure, and ability to age while remaining approachable and expressive.

Famiglia Pasetti is also recognized as a steward of its region, proudly representing Abruzzo’s cultural and agricultural heritage through wines that honor both family legacy and place.

  • Somm Notes

The Harimann label represents Pasetti’s top-tier Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and its name carries deep historical significance. “Harimann” comes from the ancient Germanic warriors (Hari-mann) who settled in Abruzzo during medieval times, meaning “free man” or “landholder”. This reflects the wine’s powerful, expressive character and strong connection to the local land. The name symbolizes strength, freedom, and deep roots, mirroring the intensity and longevity of the Montepulciano grapes used in this wine, while honoring the heritage of the Gran Sasso foothills where the Pasetti estate thrives.

    The Montepulciano Grape:
The Harimann 2018 showcases the Montepulciano grape at its finest, a native Italian red variety predominantly grown in Abruzzo. Montepulciano produces full-bodied, structured wines with deep ruby color, ripe dark cherry, plum, and blackberry flavors, layered with spice and earthy undertones. Its late-ripening nature allows for extended hang time on well-drained, clay-limestone soils, retaining vibrant acidity while developing concentrated, age-worthy fruit. Montepulciano is also clonally diverse, with some clones emphasizing bright red fruit and floral notes, and others providing dense black fruit, minerality, and savory complexity. Though often confused with Sangiovese used in Tuscany’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Montepulciano produces richer, darker, and more robust wines, reflecting the unique terroir of Abruzzo, whereas Vino Nobile offers lighter, more aromatic, and herbally nuanced expressions.

    Food Pairings:
Harimann’s rich fruit, vibrant acidity, and polished tannins make it highly versatile with food. It pairs beautifully with hearty Italian fare, such as roasted lamb, beef stews, or mushroom risotto, and complements pasta with tomato-based sauces. The wine’s earthy, spicy nuances also shine alongside aged cheeses and charcuterie boards, highlighting both elegance and depth. As Pasetti’s top-tier Montepulciano, Harimann is perfect for special occasions or sophisticated meals, showcasing the best expression of Gran Sasso terroir.

  • Region

Abruzzo is one of Italy’s most geographically diverse wine regions, stretching from the Adriatic coast to the Apennine Mountains. This unique positioning creates a climate that balances warm, sun-soaked days with cool, breezy nights, making it ideal for growing a wide range of grape varieties. Both reds and whites thrive here, retaining natural acidity, freshness, and expressive aromas while developing complexity and structure.

The region’s vineyards are often planted on slopes and terraces, benefiting from excellent sunlight exposure, natural drainage, and air circulation. Abruzzo’s elevation gradient—from coastal plains to mountain foothills—allows for subtle variations in temperature and sunlight, helping grapes reach optimal ripeness while preserving freshness and aromatic nuance.

Abruzzo’s soils are highly varied, contributing to the region’s versatility:

Clay and limestone: Provide structure, depth, and mid-palate weight, supporting both robust reds and fuller-bodied whites.

Calcareous soils: Enhance freshness, lift, and minerality, particularly noticeable in Abruzzo’s native white grapes like Trebbiano, Pecorino, and Passerina.

Gravelly pockets: Promote drainage, encourage deep root growth, and concentrate flavors across varietals.

This combination of climate, elevation, and soil diversity gives Abruzzo wines a distinctive sense of place. From vibrant whites to structured reds, the region’s terroir consistently produces wines that are balanced, expressive, and reflective of both mountains and sea.

Pasetti’s vineyards are nestled in the foothills of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, where the combination of elevation, slope, and mountain-influenced microclimates creates ideal conditions for high-quality Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. The estate carefully manages parcels at 400–550 meters above sea level, often on east- or southeast-facing slopes, ensuring optimal sun exposure, natural drainage, and consistent airflow. These vineyards feature clay-limestone soils enriched with calcareous elements and pockets of gravel, producing grapes with concentration, balanced acidity, and expressive minerality. Pasetti’s commitment to low yields and meticulous vineyard selection further enhances the intensity, structure, and aging potential of their wines, making the estate a standout terroir within Abruzzo.

The grapes for Harimann Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOP are sourced from a historic two-hectare vineyard in Pescosansonesco, perched at 550 meters in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, one of Abruzzo’s most celebrated terroirs. The vineyard’s clay-calcareous soils rich in organic matter provide excellent drainage and encourage deep roots, while the cool nights and warm days of this elevated site extend the ripening period, preserving freshness and natural acidity. With vines over 60 years old and low yields, the grapes develop concentrated flavors, layered aromatics, and structural depth. Harvested by hand in early November to ensure full phenolic ripeness, these Montepulciano grapes capture the unique character of the Gran Sasso foothills, producing a wine that is balanced, expressive, and distinctly reflective of Pasetti’s estate terroir.
