  • Tasting Notes

The 2022 LM de Moussas Bordeaux Rouge is a balanced, entry-level Bordeaux crafted from a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Its deep ruby color hints at the elegance within, while the nose offers inviting aromas of blackberry, plum, and currant, accented by subtle hints of cassis, dark chocolate, cedar, and oak spice.

On the palate, soft tannins and lively acidity provide structure, framing flavors of ripe red and dark fruits, leather, and a touch of spice. This approachable wine captures the old-world character of Bordeaux, offering elegance and finesse at an accessible price point, making it perfect for both everyday enjoyment and casual gatherings.

  • Story

Château Lynch‑Moussas is one of the iconic Wines of Pauillac — a 5ᵉ Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification.

Its storied legacy dates back to the 17th century, rooted in the estates of the Jehan family before being acquired by the Lynch family in 1748 through marriage.

In 1779, Jean‑Baptiste Lynch inherited the property, and following his death in 1835, the estate was split: Château Lynch‑Moussas (on the Moussas plateau) and Lynch‑Bages were born.

By 1847, the Vasquez family took ownership, and a few years later—and crucially—Lynch‑Moussas was officially classified among Bordeaux’s elite in the 1855 Grand Cru ranking.

A transformative chapter began in 1919, when Jean Castéja acquired the estate, bringing it into the prominent Castéja family portfolio.

Under Émile Castéja’s stewardship in the 1970s, the once-diminished vineyard (which had shrunk significantly) was replanted, and the château and cellars were modernized.

In the 2000s, Philippe Castéja took the reins, ushering in a new era of innovation — working with renowned consultant Denis Dubourdieu, he introduced progressive viticultural methods and winemaking techniques.

In 2001, the estate launched its second wine, Les Hauts de Lynch‑Moussas, sourced from younger vines, offering a more accessible window into the Pauillac terroir.

In 2019, the Castéja family celebrated 100 years of ownership, underscoring their deep-rooted commitment to preserving and elevating this Grand Cru.

Today, Château Lynch‑Moussas spans approximately 62 hectares planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, carefully tended by a dedicated team under Philippe Castéja.

Their philosophy balances tradition and modernity — from vineyard work to vinification and aging — always with a deep respect for the terroir and a drive for excellence.

  • Somm Notes

In the world of Bordeaux, many estates produce entry-level or “secondary” labels, and LM de Moussas can be seen as part of this trend. I think this is a response to the decline of wine consumption in younger generations. These entry level wines are approachable in their youth with lively fruit and a balance between acidity and soft tannins.Their approachability - both in terms of flavors and cost - give the wineries cash flow while maintaining the prestige of their premium wines.

The 2022 LM de Moussas is a classic example of a Bordeaux AOP value wine from a good vintage, delivering the signature flavors of the region — ripe black and red fruits, cassis, cedar, and subtle spice — at an accessible price point. For those looking to enjoy a taste of quality Bordeaux without waiting years, this wine provides both structure and elegance, making it ideal for casual sipping, weeknight dinners, or introducing newcomers to Bordeaux style.

Food Pairing: LM de Moussas pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled meats, mushroom dishes, and aged cheeses. It’s also an excellent match for charcuterie boards or tomato-based pastas, making it a versatile, everyday Bordeaux for casual meals or entertaining.

  • Region

Bordeaux’s terroir is perfectly suited to both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the two pillars of the region’s red wines. On the Left Bank, well-drained gravel soils are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives in soils that force deep root growth. These conditions produce wines with structure, firm tannins, and age-worthy concentration, while the maritime climate tempers extremes, allowing for even ripening.

On the Right Bank, clay-limestone soils favor Merlot. The denser, moisture-retentive soils help the grape develop plush fruit, roundness, and velvety tannins, even in cooler years. Merlot’s adaptability to these soils contributes to wines with rich berry flavors, approachable texture, and early drinkability, making it the dominant variety on the Right Bank.

Bordeaux’s maritime climate, influenced by the Gironde estuary, provides mild winters, warm summers, and consistent rainfall, which supports healthy vine growth and balanced ripening. The combination of soil, climate, and varietal selection allows Bordeaux reds to express a harmony of fruit, structure, and elegance, whether dominated by Cabernet on the Left Bank or Merlot on the Right.
