Tasting Notes
Displaying a jeweled ruby color from core to rim, the wine displays alluring aromas of tart cranberry and pomegranate, complemented by an undertone of black tea and hints of hibiscus and rose hip. Combination of plush dark fruits - black cherries, blackberries, mulberries are complemented by bursts of red fruits - pomegranate, raspberry. The palate has a comforting forest floor earthiness with subtle hints of oyster shell and wet stone - like finding a river or creek after emerging from a damp forest. The finely tuned balance of acidity and tannins creates a textured elegance, all ending in a persistent finish. Will only improve with age as the bottle settles.

Somm Notes
If one word defines the 2023 growing season in the Russian River Valley, it’s water. After several drought years, a series of atmospheric rivers drenched Sonoma County through the winter and early spring, refilling aquifers and leaving vineyards with a saturated soil profile as the season began. Cool, wet weather through March and early April delayed budbreak by several weeks, pushing the growing cycle later than usual. Moderate summer temperatures allowed fruit to develop slowly with remarkable flavor concentration and acidity.
Across the Russian River Valley, 2023 is already being recognized as a standout vintage for Pinot Noir. Following years of heat-driven harvests, the cool, extended season allowed grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness at lower sugar levels, producing wines with bright red fruit, supple tannins, and natural tension. Early tastings highlight elegance, purity, and lifted aromatics, positioning 2023 as one of the most balanced and cellar-worthy vintages of the past decade. Many in the trade are calling it a “return to classic Russian River restraint,” with wines that emphasize finesse over power
At George Menini Estate, the cool, foggy days of the Sebastopol Hills and well-drained Goldridge soils created ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. Careful canopy management and crop thinning ensured balanced clusters and precise phenolic development. Harvest began on September 20—the latest in over a decade—yielding fruit with vivid red cherry, pomegranate, and raspberry leaf notes, underpinned by subtle earth and spice. The 2023 George Menini Estate Pinot Noir is elegant, layered, and finely structured, showcasing the tension and minerality of cool-climate Russian River Valley Pinot Noir while reflecting Paul Hobbs’ meticulous stewardship.
Sustainability - Paul Hobbs Winery is committed to sustainability through eco-friendly vineyard management, water conservation, and energy-efficient practices. The winery uses organic and biodynamic methods to maintain soil health, avoids synthetic chemicals, and promotes biodiversity. Water conservation is prioritized with efficient irrigation systems, while low crop yields enhance fruit quality and reduce environmental strain. In the cellar, native yeast fermentation minimizes chemical additives, allowing the wines to naturally reflect their terroir. These efforts ensure that Paul Hobbs Winery produces exceptional wines while protecting the environment for future generations.
Reviews:
“Wow, a super well-structured, vital wine with oodles of generous black fruit flavors on a firm frame that will help it age well and improve with time. Black cherries, blackberries, blueberries, forest floor nuances and a slight smoky, stemmy character from using mostly Calera-clone grapes, with 15% whole clusters and 30% new French oak. Great interplay between layered fruit and a fresh, crunchy texture.”
- 98pts; Jim Gordon, James Suckling
“The 2023 Pinot Noir George Menini Estate is stunning. It offers a captivating mix of aromatic intensity, structure and deep fruit. Its balance is mind-blowing. The clonal mix of Calera, Mt. Eden and115 gave rise to a Pinot of rare distinction and dynamic energy. I loved it. A closing burst of red/purplish fruit, rose petal and mocha lingers on the finish. What a stunner.”
- 97pts; Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“This is vivid, bristling with crunchy acidity that helps drive a mix of mulberry, black cherry and raspberry fruit along, while letting in rose hip, hibiscus and pomegranate accents along the edges. Expressive and well- defined, this is brimming with energy.”

Region
The George Menini Estate, located in the Sebastopol Hills of the southwestern Russian River Valley, benefits from a unique microclimate that sets it apart from the broader region. Cool ocean breezes and morning fog roll in from the Pacific, creating a consistently cool, temperate environment. This cooling effect is particularly strong in the Sebastopol Hills compared to the warmer, more inland areas of the Russian River Valley. As a result, the estate enjoys a longer growing season, which allows Pinot Noir grapes to develop complex flavors while maintaining vibrant acidity.
This distinct terroir, marked by sandstone soils and a cooler, foggy microclimate, plays a key role in producing Pinot Noir with refined elegance and intensity. The extended hang time allows the grapes to ripen slowly, enhancing their natural fruit expression, while the cool temperatures preserve their delicate structure and freshness. As Paul Hobbs acquired this vineyard in 2012, naming it after the former proprietor and apple farmer George Menini, the estate has since become a premier site for cultivating premium Pinot Noir. The result is wines that are focused, balanced, and rich in blue and red fruit flavors, with a signature brightness and complexity characteristic of the Sebastopol Hills terroir.
